As the weather gets colder, our screening "old friend"—the square gyratory screen—needs to keep warm and prevent freezing. With winter approaching, equipment maintenance is crucial. The biggest concerns with a square gyratory screen in winter are freezing and becoming brittle. Remember these five simple steps to avoid most problems, ensuring a smooth winter and ensuring production.
Step 1: Warm up before starting the machine.
Manual Turn: Before turning on the power, gently turn the pulley a few times by hand or with a tool to check the bearings and reducer for flexibility. If they won't turn, don't force it!
No-load Run: Press the start button and let the screening equipment idle for 5-10 minutes. This process, like warming up a car in winter, allows the lubricant to flow and preheats all components.
Step 2: Gently Add Material
After the square gyratory screen is preheated, don't fill it all at once. Add material slowly and evenly to allow the equipment to gradually adjust to the load.
Step 3: Listen and Watch During Operation
Listen for Sound: During normal operation, the sound should be steady. If any unusual banging or grinding sounds are heard, immediately stop the machine and inspect.
Touch the Temperature: After a period of operation, gently touch the bearing seat with the back of your hand. If it feels hot (over 45°C), there may be a lubrication problem.
Step 4: Thoroughly Clean After Shutdown
This is the most critical step! After each operation, the screen and screen body must be completely cleaned of any residual material. Otherwise, these residues will freeze and expand overnight, potentially cracking the screen and damaging the seals. The next time you restart the machine, you'll end up with a pot of ice porridge, severely damaging the equipment!
Step 5: Cover the equipment after extended downtime.
After cleaning, cover the equipment, especially the control cabinet and motor, with a waterproof sheet to prevent rain and snow from entering.
If the equipment is frozen and unable to start, do not force it! Use a heat gun or steam hose to gently and evenly heat the reducer, bearing seat, and other parts. Wait until the heat has thawed before attempting manual rotation. Winter maintenance of your square gyratory screen not only ensures production continuity but also significantly extends the equipment's lifecycle, reduces lifecycle costs, and creates direct economic value for your business.
